Here is a link to the notes we will be going over in class. Pay special attention to the different types of speciation. They are allopatric and sympatric. Of the sympatric category there are 4 major subcategories we will be discussing which are behavioral, temporal, mechanical and gametic.

Today you will have a substitute. The two assignments you will be working on are the first two pages of the Evolution Unit in Canvas. They tell you that you will be doing the following: In order to understand Evolution we are going to begin by defining ten words in your notebook. You can either use your computer to search for definitions or you can use a textbook. Please draw a box like the one here for each word so that by the end you will define the word, draw a picture, give an example and explain how it relates to you or this unit. Vocabulary list: Natural Selection, Selective Pressure, Reproductive Isolation, Speciation, Genetic Variation, Inference, Scientific Theory, Homologous structures, Adaptation, Taxonomy Once you have completed the definitions above you will start on a research project.
Research Adaptations: You will choose one of the animals below to research. You can find your own links and pictures and should not feel tied to the one provided. Create a digital poster answering the questions below the links. You can use either google docs, adobe spark or any other digital poster method you are aware of as long as it can be sent to your teacher for review. Be creative, try to make it as visually appealing as possible while still being informative. - Tawny Owls - Peppered Moth - Three toed skink- live birth - Marine Iguanas - Anolis Lizards - Darwin’s Finches - Rock Pocket Mice - New Mexico whiptail lizard - Light and melanic jaguar - Viceroy butterfly- mimic monarch - Milk snake- mimic coral - Poison Dart Frog -What trend do you see to this situation and others that you have seen throughout the school year? -How would the ecosystem be affected if this animal was removed? -How has this population changed over time? -What was the environmental pressure that caused this change? How did it affect the outcome? -How do these traits aid or hurt them in the survival process? -How does the size of the population affect the rate at which change occurs? (a lot of organisms vs. very few) -Now create a diagram and a graph to show change over time and identify patterns. When you are finished, find at least 5 people who are also finished that chose different animals from the list than yours and talk about your animals. You should be able to recognize the survival story of quite a few of these are sounding similar to others or your own animal. We are taking the Mutations Mastery Check today and presenting the Genetic Disorder research (handout was given in class but if you lost it you can find it in Canvas). We will then be preparing for a test on the entire unit. Please sure the links below to prepare.
