As per your disclosure document: Grades are standard based which means that 90% of your grade will be recorded as mastery of the standards. The other 10% is participation based. This means that we could have several assignments that will help you master one of the standards but it will be recorded as one or two of the mastery assignments for that specific standard. Some assignments will not be graded and will help you to achieve mastery so working on them is essential.

Today in class we took Mastery Check #2. This is our last full day in the Scientific Method and Graphing Unit. Afterwards we went over the parts of a graph and then did a practice sheet of the variables (Independent and Dependent). We then began a graphing practice sheet which we will go over next time.
Everyday in class, we will be taking a small quiz called a Mastery Check. This is to show me your understanding on our 4 finger scale of what we learned the previous day. Today we took our first one. If you are absent, please come see me before or after school to take the Mastery Check.
Once we completed the Mastery Check, I assigned students a plucker number. These numbers will be used frequently throughout the year to help me grade quickly and maintain privacy. Please keep this number private. We went over how to organize your 3 ring binder before moving onto a lab. Our lab today was measuring your heart rate increase when you excersized. Students used the scientific method steps to make observations, create a hypothesis, test the hypothesis, record data in a graph and then form a conclusion about the hypothesis they created. Today in Biology, students turned in their signed Disclosure document. We then took a pretest for the upcoming Ecology unit. This is graded purely on participation and not in their knowledge of the content. We then wrote a SMART goal for the entire school year. Students made sure their notebooks were organized before creating the 2nd tab, Scientific Method/Graphing.
We began this unit by going over the steps of the Scientific Method. The first step is to make an observation. There are two different types of observations: qualitative and quantitative. Students were asked to compare and contrast them using a Venn diagram. Qualitative is more of an opinion of the quality of something while quantitative is a fact giving a precise number. We were able to go outside and made observations about our surroundings. Today in class, students were given the disclosure document as homework to bring back signed for class next time. I explained the Grizzly Guide and how it applies to the classroom setting before distributing a hall pass sign out sheet, an attendance tracker and a teaming sign up sheet. These 4 papers are to be kept in the first tab of your notebook which will be labeled PERSONAL. If you were absent, please come and grab these papers from me.
Next time we will take a pretest before beginning our next unit which will be labeled in your binder- SCIENTIFIC METHOD/GRAPHING Welcome back to Timberline Middle School. Through out the year we will be learning about Ecology, Chemistry, Cells, Genetics, DNA, Evolution and more. I ask that each day your student bring a 3 ring binder just for Science with 9 individual tabs, lined paper a writing utensil and a correcting pen which will be a brighter color. If you are able to donate any additional binders and/or tabs to the class for those students who don't have one, that would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to contact me via email with any questions at [email protected].
