Today in class, we are going to be doing the Evolution Do I know? review to prepare us for the test on April 11th. We will also be playing Kahoot and scanning QR codes for Evolution information. Please look at the Evolution Unit page for all the information we are reviewing and working on.

Today in class, we went over the notes for Evolution that are posted on my website. We also talked about the Early Evolutionary Thinkers and read about Lamarck, Wallace and Darwin's theories. Afterwards, we went over the reading guide from last time before talking about how to do a Dichotomous Classification key and practicing with the fish key. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWUqQyVa5ts Today in class we are going to answer some of the questions that were written last time about Evolution. We will then discuss religions and their thoughts on evolution before reviewing what a theory is and going over the webquest from last time. Afterwards we will work through Evolution notes . If we have enough time we will talk about the Classification and Phylogenetics notes. We are beginning our unit on Evolution today. Last time, we watched a video on Evolutionary Theories. Today we are going to talk about what makes a Theory before moving onto misconceptions about evolution. After that, we are doing a webquest to help introduce the concepts.
Today in class, we reviewed the Mutations notes and worksheet from last week and then took a Mastery Check on it. Afterwards we went over the DNA technologies webquest from last time. Please finish this as homework if it is not yet done. We watched this video on DNA technologies. I then handed out the DNA test review in preparation for the test next time. Today, you should have already finished the Mutations worksheet, and either turned in Sally's Candy Factory or taken it back to remediate it if you got less than 5. Then please work on the DNA Technology webquest for the remainder of the class period. If you finish the assignment and you feel you have done your best on the Mutations worksheet and Sally's Candy Factory then you are welcome to check out the Mammal March Madness media coverage updates to see who is winning already and why. Plan on a Mastery Check next time (Monday) based on the information you learned this week. The last day of the term is Thursday. Everything needs to be remediated by Monday. Have a great weekend!
Today in class we reviewed the process of transcription and translation by looking at this Candy Factory analogy. Transcription is the process of making a copy of DNA into messenger RNA by RNA polymerase. The DNA is unable to leave the nucleus but mRNA can. This is great because the RNA must take this copy to the ribosomes which are either free floating in the cytoplasm outside the nucleus or attached to the endoplasmic reticulum. It is here at the rRNA that it can be translated from mRNA into a protein by tRNA. The tRNA reads the stand of mRNA 3 bases at a time and then brings the corresponding amino acid. Those amino acids continue to grow in a chain as the strand is read and then broken off to form a protein. We completed this DNA Translation practice in order to understand how to translate DNA into mRNA and finally into a protein. It can all be viewed by looking at this Translation picture which we had reviewed last time.
