Today in class we took Mastery Check #2 on tRNA, mRNA and rRNA. Please refer to the DNA tab for some awesome videos on these. We then went over the RNA notes and watched some videos on RNA and protein synthesis. Please watch all these videos which are in the tab and then make sure you know how to code for amino acids and fill out this visual.

Today in class we are going to go over Protein Synthesis. We have been talking about the 3 different types of RNA. Not we are going to talk about how those play a role in creating a protein. We will be taking a Mastery Check on those 3 different RNA types to ensure we understand what their role is. The video below is a great visual way to see how DNA is translated into RNA and then copied into those proteins. Today in class, we reviewed the Structure and History notes from last time. We then took a Mastery Check based off that information. Once we completed that, we talked about RNA and the difference between that and DNA. We then talked about the 3 different types of RNA and made an analogy to fit each one. You an also view the RNA notes here that we will be covering next time. Today in class, we went over the remediation requirements for the Genetics test. We then started talking about the History of DNA. Please see the Genetics Unit tab for more information about the reading we did, the videos we watched and the Structure and History of DNA notes that we went over.
Today we are taking the Genetics test. When you are done with the test do the following things in order:
1. Check Skyward, if you have missing assignments or things that need remediation (below 75%) make a plan to get them done. If you are not ready to do them today, sign up on my retake list. 2. Check out Pigeonetics. View the games, inter actives and articles. 3. Play the game Who wants to live a million years? 4.Our next unit is on DNA Translation and Transcription. Read at least 3 articles on exciting things happening currently in Utah it. Today in class we talked more about Selective Breeding and Bioethical Decision making by watching a clip of the movie Gattaca. We then played Kahoot and worked together to review the material that will be on the test next time.
Today we reviewed the notes from last time on Dosage Compensation, Incomplete dominance, Co-dominance and Sex-linked traits. We then went over Pedigree notes and turned in the pedigree practice from last time. Once that was complete we talked about the different blood types and began the ABO blood type lab. This practice is a great example of co-dominance with A and B being co-dominant.
Today in class we went over the quiz we took last time. Students can retake this quiz to get a better grade. We then went over the worksheet on Elf Genetics and practiced punnett squares on the white boards. After that, we started learning about Non-Mendelian genetics. Basically those things that break Mendel's 3 laws. These include co-dominance, incomplete dominance, dosage compensation and sex-linkage. We then did some practice using Oompa Loompa's and then some pedigree practice. Please have both of these completed next time and be ready for the Mastery Check.
Today in class we took a quiz on Mitosis and Meiosis. We then went over notes on Genetic notes and then we did the Elf Genetics worksheet to practice Punnett Squares. We then did the Genetics test review.
Students finished their stop motion videos and they were presented on Monday of this week. The videos were a ton of fun to watch! They also were to turn in a write up of what is happening in each of the 9 phases of Meiosis. We then did an activity to show crossing over and how it might effect genes that are close together on the chromosome. We call those genes "linked genes". On Wednesday, we watched this video about DNA. This video shows a sticker with foul language for a few seconds, please just skip from 4:50-5:00. |
